NEW HANOVER COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) – Alliance for Cape Fear Trees and New Hanover County are partnering to distribute 1,000 native trees to the Murrayville community this fall.
The giveaway, scheduled for Nov. 7, focuses on Murrayville specifically due to the area’s low canopy coverage, high heat disparity and increasing stormwater management issues.
“Restoring tree canopy in Murrayville is a long-term investment in the health and resilience of this community,” said New Hanover County Commissioner Rob Zapple. “By putting large-growing native trees directly into residents’ hands, we have an opportunity to create meaningful change—not just for individual properties, but for the neighborhood as a whole.”
Attendees can choose from Southern Live Oak, American Elm, Black Cherry, Red Maple or Southern Magnolia trees. Volunteers, certified arborists and trained Tree Stewards will also be on-site to provide guidance and educational materials about tree selection, planting, placement and long-term care.
The giveaway will be held at Murrayville Elementary School from 9 a.m. to noon, or while supplies last.
Between 9 and 11 a.m., priority will be given to Murrayville residents. From 11 a.m. to noon, distribution will open to all New Hanover County residents.
