Zohaib “Zo” Qadri will almost certainly continue to serve as UT and West Campus’ Austin City Council Representative for the next four years, according to Travis County Elections data. Qadri faced four challengers and received 51.38% of the vote with 100% of the vote reported, narrowly avoiding a runoff election.
Qadri campaigned on expanding the University Neighborhood Overlay, a zoning plan that promotes high-density housing in West Campus and supports affordability and walkability. He also campaigned on policing reforms, including expanding mental health services and building Project Connect, a transit plan that would add new light rail and CapMetro lines.
Qadri is a UT alumnus and Austin’s first South Asian City Council member. Now that he has won a second term, he will require extra signatures to get on the ballot in future City Council elections. He said his campaign was largely composed of students.
“Thank you to everyone who knocked doors, made calls, and believed in our vision for this city,” Qadri wrote in an Instagram post. “I’m ready to keep fighting for an Austin that works for all of us.”
